LOS ANGELES, CA — September 13, 2026 — Ask a room full of ambitious people what would most likely change their life, and the popular guess is a business idea. The actual answer, according to audience polling by business educator Adella Pasos, is a skill. When Pasos polled her community of more than 50,000 subscribers, learning a high-income skill won at 47 percent — beating every business model on the ballot.
The finding captures a quiet shift in how working people think about economic mobility. A business carries risk, overhead, and uncertainty; a skill is portable, stackable, and immediately sellable. Copywriting, AI-assisted services, video editing, web design, bookkeeping, paid ads — each can produce freelance income within months and can later become the foundation of a business, without ever requiring a risky leap.
Pasos sees the result as a correction, not a retreat from entrepreneurship. “A high-income skill is a business with training wheels,” she says. “You learn, you earn, and if you want to scale it into a company later, the foundation is already paying you.”
The data also carries a warning about the skills-course industry: with courses priced from $500 to $2,000 and rankings often driven by affiliate commissions, choosing the wrong skill costs the average learner six months.
