So, you have decided to give fasting a go. You have read as much literature you can find, you know all about the benefits, and you are ready to launch into a new lifestyle without having to do much more than put a timed lock on your kitchen cupboard. You are feeling positive, ready for the change, and feel like you have already turned over a new leaf
That is… until the first hour hits, and your tummy starts to grumble. Hour 2 and you are feeling hungry, but you remind yourself it is a good thing. But then hour 3 gets here, and you wonder – how on earth do people do this?!
This piece will give you some top tips on how to get through your first fast. It does get easier… eventually!
Start Small
We all know that one person who likes to go all in or nothing from the get go, and that person may even be you, but when it comes to some things, less and often is better. Fasting will be a shock to the system for those who consume a typical western diet, so ease into your chosen fasting routine accordingly and do not try to cut out everything for long periods of time all at once.
Please consult a healthcare practitioner to find out whether fasting is right for you and which plan would be best. They can help monitor your progress and your health.
Eat
This advice might seem a little counterproductive considering the nature of the piece, but eating during your fast does not actually have to break all of your hard work. Certain fruits and vegetables can help keep the hunger pangs and cravings at bay without you sacrificing the benefits of fasting. Some fasting plans encourage eating, too, such as the 5:2 plan; however, the plan that will be best for you will depend on what you want to achieve from fasting. Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is important at even the best of times, but it is a crucial element when it comes to fasting. Your glycogen stores hold water, and as you burn through those in a fast before your body switches to burning fat, you become at an even greater risk of dehydration.
This is why it is extremely important to keep on top of hydrating your body throughout the process. We also consume approximately 20% of our water intake through food, which you are not getting when you are completing a fast, so that is something extra to consider too. Good hydration helps your body run more smoothly, eliminate waste, and generally look after itself well. Not to forget that dehydration can cause some serious issues
The most important thing you can do when fasting is to listen to your body. Do not continue on a fast if you feel unwell, and consult a doctor wherever possible to make sure you stay in good health.
